Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007 (EISA)
Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007 Mandates Products with
Increased Energy Efficiency
It’s the Law:
Signed by President Bush on December 19, 2007, the Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007 sets new far-reaching regulations on energy usage that became effective on January 1, 2009. The Act establishes compulsory standards for walk-in coolers and freezers, as well as a wide variety of other appliances and equipment. The Act affects the construction of glass doors, walk-in panels, and internal lighting related to walk-in coolers and freezers.
Technically Speaking:
There are 3 primary specifications that will affect the glass display door and frame system:
- Glass doors for walk-in coolers shall be either double-pane glass with heat reflective treated glass AND gas fill or triple-pane glass with either heat-reflective treated glass OR gas fill.
- Glass doors for walk-in freezers shall be of triple-pane glass with either heat-reflective treated glass OR gas fill.
- If the assembly has an anti-sweat heater, it must have a total door rail, glass, and frame heater power draw of not more than 7.1 watts per square foot for freezers and 3.0 watts per square foot for coolers. If these energy draws are exceeded then the assembly must be equipped with an automatic energy controller.
Exclusions:
- This law does not affect remote, self-contained, and other reach-in cases. Only walk-in boxes are specified in the Act.
- Applications for medical, scientific, or research purposes are exempt.
- Walk-ins larger than 3,000 square feet are exempt.
Times Are Changing:
STYLELINE® doors will comply with the new energy standards while increasing both performance and energy efficiency. The doors in the updated product line now protect up to 75% relative humidity. STYLELINE® continues to offer the most energy efficient door and frame systems on the market. Since the law has already become effective, the EISA compliant doors will need to be purchased for all new stores and remodels with no exceptions.
